The Worst Roman Persecution Christians Ever Had to Face

The Worst Roman Persecution Christians Ever Had to Face ABC.org

Description: The book of Revelation has been the subject of much interpretation and debate; it is commonly believed that John’s writing reflects the early Christians’ struggle within the context of a hostile Roman Empire, with Emperor Domitian often considered a likely figure for the persecutor described in the text. However, a compelling argument can be made that the events and patterns in Revelation do not align with any known historical events during the ninth decade of the first century Roman world.  In fact, the worst persecution of Christians by Romans happened in the fourth century under Emperor Diocletian,  but that further complicates the claim that Revelation speaks of Roman hostilities against Christians.  Instead, Jewish history strongly suggests that what John describes could be linked to the Jewish nationalistic efforts to overthrow Roman rule in the Holy Land and their parallel efforts to destroy the emerging Church, which refused to cooperate with or be a part of any anti-Roman activities whatsoever.  And by refusing to be branded or pledge any allegiance to Jewish efforts to galvanize patriots, Christians lost their lives in numbers now unknown to us,  This is an interesting perspective that sheds light on a powerful alternative interpretation of the book of Revelation.

It’s clear that there are diverse views on the interpretation of Revelation, and these Atavist reflections, observations, and insights may add depth to the ongoing discussion of its meaning and precise historical context.
