Peshat in the New Testament November 30 2023 True Christian Press eBook

Description: Standing at the intersection of ancient Jewish interpretation and New Testament prophecy, this talk explores how the plain sense reading of Scripture (Peshat) proved more revolutionary than any authoritarian interpretation approved by the Scribes and sages of the period of late sectarian Judaism.  Through careful examination of the Dead Sea Scrolls and New Testament texts, we discover how different Jewish communities approached biblical interpretation in the first century - and how their methods were ultimately validated or invalidated by historical events.

At the heart of this exploration lies a profound truth: while anyone can propose interpretations of prophecy, fulfillment remains in God’s hands alone.  The talk examines how the New Testament writers’ use of the Greek word τόπος (topos) for the Temple reveals their understanding that its destruction marked a permanent transition in God’s salvific purposes.  And archaeological evidence from the Bar Kokhba revolt, including coins depicting a planned Third Temple and documents from the Cave of Letters, provides dramatic confirmation that attempts to resurrect the Temple system failed spectacularly.

This historical investigation carries urgent implications for modern biblical interpretation, challenging contemporary attempts to transform straightforward (Peshat)prophecies about first-century events into Pesher predictions about our own time.  Through careful analysis of both text and history, the talk demonstrates that the plain sense of Scripture often proves more profound - and more accurately fulfilled - than arbitrary or private interpretive schemes could suggest.
