Notes
1 About Saint Mark: He was one of Christ’s 70 disciples and the four evangelists, Saint Mark was born in Cyrene, Libya but his date of birth is unknown. He traveled with Saint Barnabas and Saint Paul on many religious missions, during which he founded the Church of Alexandria. He was killed by Alexandrians circa April 25, 68 A.D. in Alexandria, Egypt. Coptic Orthodox Christians recognize him as the founder of their Church, which dates back to A.D.44.
2 The Textus Receptus was transmitted to us by Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus, a Dutch Christian.
3 The First editions of the New Testament were written by hand in all capital letters (there was no lower case Greek letters in the first century).
4 Conventional verse numbers have been retained for ease in identifying verses.
5 Since the early Christians and their churches had no means to mass print, copies of the New Testament were duplicated by hand and passed on to other individuals and congregations.
6 A theory of corruption in transmission might also be countered with a proposition that Mark made more than a single manuscript and all variations of the text are, therefore inspired with neither the long version nor the short version of the Kata Markon being unauthorized copies, but both being inspired by the will of God. If this idea is correct, it may be an error to assume that the authors of the Bible only made only one copy of their work or that each new copy was exactly the same.
7 Words in red are Christ’s.
8 Two promises ensure that Jesus’s words are preserved for us:
1 “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away” (Matthew 24:35). “Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away” (Mark 13:31), “Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away” (Luke 21:33)—words of our Lord.
2 “For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: but the word of the Lord endureth forever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you” 1 Peter 1:24-25)—words penned by Silas, the amanuensis of the Apostle Peter.
If we believe in God we can trust God and depend on him to preserve the record of his Son (1 John 5:10-12).
