Below are prayers uttered by God’s servants and ancient Semitic Christians on and near the approaching eve of the A.D.66—70 Destruction of Jerusalem.  The rebellious nation accepted the Father, but rejected the Son and refused the perfect sacrifice that came to supersede all the daily and annual sacrifices that had been prescribed by God to Moses and Aaron and the Levitical priesthood.  Therefore, in the last forty years of the Second Temple God refused to recognize the sacrificial offerings and indicated this rejection when the priestly scarlet ribbon never turned white again.¹ 

Such a change, dramatic as that was, forebode only more prodigies to come, till, at last, the tribunal was set and the holy ones cried,

“Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.   Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure, they are and were created.” (Revelation 4:8, 11).²

“Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; and hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.  Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, riches, wisdom, strength, honor, glory, and blessing.

Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb forever and ever.  Amen.”  (Revelation 5:9,12-14).³

“Great and marvelous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.

4 Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest” (Revelation 15:3-4).⁴

“Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.

6 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast has given them blood to drink; for they are worthy” (Revelation 16:5-6).⁵

“Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honor, and power, unto the Lord our God:  for true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.

3  Alleluia!  Amen; Alleluia.  Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great.

Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honor to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.  Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God”  (Revelation 19:9).

Even after almost 1,951 years of time, God’s Word is still true and faithful, and on the confidence that we have in Christ, we can boldly approach the throne of grace and find mercy and grace to help in the time of need.⁶

“R. Nahman b. Isaac said it was the tongue of scarlet’, as it has been taught: ‘Originally they used to fasten the thread of scarlet on the door of the [Temple] court on the outside.28 If it turned white the people used to rejoice,29 and if it did not turn white they were sad. They, therefore, made a rule that it should be fastened to the door of the court on the inside. People, however, still peeped in and saw, and if it turned white they rejoiced and if it did not turn white they were sad. They, therefore, made a rule that half of it should be fastened to the rock and half between the horns of the goat that was sent [to the wilderness]’. . . . If you assume It was R. Johanan b. What the Father says about the Son,

8 But to the Son He says:  “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;

A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.

Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You

With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.”  And: “You, Lord, in the beginning, laid the foundation of the earth,  And the heavens are the work of Your hands.  They will perish, but You remain; And they will all grow old like a garment; 12 Like a cloak You will fold them up, And they will be changed. But You are the same, And Your years will not fail.” 13 But to which of the angels has He ever said: “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool?” (Hebrews 1:8-13).

These victorious Hebrew Christians refused to submit to seditious nationalism and paid the heavy price with their lives (Revelation 12:11). It is here that John vividly sees that their courageous abiding in Jesus our Lord was rewarded immediately upon their execution and departure from this material world.
